Prince died April 26th, 2016; he was a fantastic performer and his music changed a generation and gave voice to their peril. Prince made a few movies; one was Purple Rain, and since his death it hit the screens again in 2016.
I went in knowing that it was an 80’s film. What I didn’t know was that it was a concert with various artist. Starring Prince with a story in there, but well let's face it. It was Prince singing and jamming for the audience. I love 80’s films, but I also don’t put too much stock into them.
Purple Rain is about; “The Kid” aka Prince, who was turning into a one hit wonder at the later part of his career. Purple Rain stars Princes' father a drunken former star and Allaponia, who is playing herself. The LA transplant who was trying to make a name for herself and as well as Morrison, another musician, who also plays himself as a rival and as a more liked star then Prince. The story starts with Allaponia entering an exclusive club, searching for work in the music world. Allaponia seemed like she came for Morrison, while “The Kid” was on stage, she fell for Prince’s talent instead.
Prince, on the other hand, fell for her the moment he looked at her. At that same time, Morrison caught a glimpse of her and knew he had to have her. From then on it was a clash between Prince and Morrison on who would get the girl. Morrison upped the ante and tried to convince the owner that Morrison’s plans there could be a better act. Then it was settled, Morrison had to do Prince out. All the while Prince wanted to woo Allaponia. While Allaponia fell for Prince, she needed to begin working since she was flat broke. Prince feared for his home since his drunken dad and his scared mother would get into desperate fights, which stunted the kid’s talent.
From there the movie went into song and dance “Prince’s style”. These events introduced new characters that wanted their voice heard, but Prince holding onto some control didn’t and couldn’t listen to what they wanted to express. Morrison was seducing Allaponia at this point with opportunity for work. It took Prince falling into his dad’s anger problems to ruin Prince and Allaponia’s romance where she fell into the clutches of Morrison easily. For a while prince just lost it.
Allaponia and Morrison now working together took the spot lite from Prince. It takes Prince’s Dad’s attempted suicide to knock Prince back into life. He then reconciles with his band, which was in the throws of despair. Prince surprises his band mates by beginning the night with their lyrics, and suddenly the crowd, which was initially closed to Prince’s wailing heart, finally hears it, and bond with him. The room starts to liven up.
At that moment Allaponia who had felt like she finally had something in her life rock solid just fell apart. It was Prince who found her and brought her back to him. She gave him another chance and it seemed a cookie cutter ending as they lived happily ever after with a better life.
There is a lot here, and yet there isn’t much. Purple Rain is mostly a collection of concerts, with a mild story. It would have been nice if we saw more about Prince's interaction with his band and family; Instead, we pay more attention to the band performance.
Now, on the other hand, it’s an 80’s movie we come for the music and the bands and the emotions of the time, Stories come second. This is one of those movies that remind you of time. P.s. There are Nudity scenes and lots of Cussing, forewarned and come and eat popcorn.

Verdict: I’d Rate it a 2 out of 5 as a movie. Though if you’re coming for nostalgia reasons I’d rate it a 4 out of 5 there are some great stage performances.
