It took eight years for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst to come out from when the original Mirror’s Edge came out. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst recently came out with a closed beta to be able to test the game to the people who registered for the beta. This game starts you off as our main character, Faith, as she was also the main character for the first game. We start out with Faith, who is in jail and is released. When released you meet a runner named Icarus, who gives you a Beat Link to keep in contact and thus starts the game. The story that they give us is Faith was arrested for two years after being caught for doing something unexplained. This game is a prequel to the original Mirror’s Edge game. The game is still in its first person view and still a parkour heavy game.
A significant change from the first game is that this game is not linear as the original game, so this allows for a lot of exploration. How you get to missions is by actually going to them, and the Beat Link is given at the beginning of the beta explains why we see red and why we, see a phantom-like red being going to lead us to our destination. There is also an upgrade system in the game that allows you to learn new abilities and many things inside. The fighting mechanics have been changed drastically from how the first game. With fighting, the first game gave only one button to hit anybody in our way, but Catalyst gives us two buttons and more varieties to counter the enemies who may want to hit you. Enemies do also have guns so you also still need to be aware of that. They also gave us timed trials that you can always do as many times as you can. There is also the ability for the player to create time trials and play other people's timed trials.
In playing this beta, it showed the improvements that they did from the E3 build they showed on the showroom floor. They made this game more graphically pleasing while refining the mechanics that they added. DICE has always been known for making great games and pretty much more well known for doing Battlefield and Battlefront as of more recent, but I see this game showing promise and has a great, big future ahead. We will see where this takes us and what the story in full will show us about Faith and her family and pretty much more.
