Kojima is back! With the release of Death Stranding’s teaser trailer, Kojima Productions’ first game seems so far we as gamers are in for a glimpse into an entirely unique experience that Kojima will bring to us sometime in 2018. But what is Death Strandings about? I have no clue, but I have a theory. I believe that there is some blight or alien invasion that has wiped out almost all life on Earth. (assuming that it is set in Earth) Especially with the five figures at the end of the video, I think they represent the five horsemen of the apocalypse and Reedus is meant to be the savior of humanity.
However, the trailer had more meaning than just the game itself. With the reveal of Norman Reedus’ character, he has one handcuff on his hand. The cuffs on Reedus’ arm is symbolic of Kojima’s journey throughout the video game industry. For decades, Kojima was the mastermind behind the best and most refined video game series in the industry Metal Gear Solid. A personal favorite of mine that rivals most movies I've seen. In 2015, Kojima ended his long-term career at Konami, the studio behind Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and many other titles. With the release of Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain, which was released unfinished, it was the last game that Kojima directed with the licensing for Kojima, and it was a sad time to see the end of a fantastic storyline. After the release of Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain, Kojima was excommunicated by Konami and wasn’t allowed to receive his final award for Game of the year from Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain’s success.
Kojima then created Kojima Productions, and the handcuff’s being off of Reedus’ character hand shows that Kojima is free from Konami’s grasp and will make things in his interests now. There is also symbology with the passed away baby. That Baby represents the lost potential with the recently canceled Silent Hill that Kojima and Norman Reedus were both a part of. But they both will carry on and make an amazing game!
